What a lovely, touching story. I had tears in my eyes throughout the story. Not just for Goldie but remembering The first goat I every had was a Nubian who also died at 10 years old. She was a kind gentle goat and though I continue to have goats, she will always remain in my heart. Thank you!

Molly, What a wonderful thing you are doing. I used to raise goats...or maybe they raised me. I LOVED our goats, milked them, played with them, bottle fed the babies, went on test with the university in Oregon to have % of butter fat tested, most were "pets" that would follow me everywhere when turned out of their pasture. All of thm knew their name and would come running when called. All knew what their number was in the order of being milked. I don't have them anymore, but love them still. My daughter (Shelly Paden) lives in OK and is now getting into goats and uses your web site as her bible. Thank you so much for what you are doing. I hope this makes people appreciate goats....... and I remind people all the time when the opportunity arrises that the milk from the goat can be given to any ANY mammal on the planet. What a blessed animal, and one that is so often misunderstood and not appreciated to the degree that they deserve. Bless you San

I am so thankful I stumbled upon this website! I currently have 2 LaMancha. Doe, both ready to kid as we speak. I am new into goats, we got them to have our own milk, but I have always been a huge animal lover as well, so it is like I gained more pets (family members). Thank you for sharing your experience with those of us who don't have much yet! Goldie sounds like an amazing goat, what a gift to have that many years with Goldie and memories to last for a lifetime!

Hello.

Very nice car. Would you mind telling me where I can get the switch panel you have. I like the metal bars that protect the switchs from being hit by mistake. Thank you

I think Goldie would have wanted you to eat her!

I’m sorry, but I just have to say that I think you are a disrespectful IDIOT!
I agree. This person must never have know that kind of love. My son lost his 20 something mustang this last fall and my first horse was 35. I now have a few goats. My first is a La Macha. She is a bottle baby and very spoiled. I am supposed to give her an all over scratch when I am with her. And I just bought a baby Boar billy that someone took to the auction. He is about 3 week now I think. I think he was a week old when I bought him. When I first saw him he was in with some older babies that kept ramming him, and he would just run in circles. I knew there was something wrong with him just could not figure it out. Turns out he is blind. I do not know if he was born this way or if it is from an injury, because he tilts his head a little to the left. But either way he is very smart. He will come to his name, if I clap my hands, or if I drag my feet along the gravel.
He is my special spoiled baby.

hi it was so hard hearing about Goldie she was a very sweet awesome goat i just recently last year purchased two little nubian goats one buck and one doe i had the buck wethered they were only 6 days old and i raised them from a bottle i am so attached to them i cant imagine losing them they see me come home and yell for me as soon as they see the car. i understand the pain of losing a loved animal two years ago i lost my little 2 pound chihuahua she was 9 years old and it was hard i still cry over her I have a horse who is 37 years old yes 37 i have had him since he was 18 months old he has always been there for me i have cried a million tears in them years with my arms wrapped around his neck and his head laying on my shoulders he is such a good friend but i know we are close to the end because he is so old i just dread that day everytime i go to the barn i wonder if he will be okay i worry about him all the time even though he is healthy and the vet says he is in good shape for his age probaby 12 years ago i lost my old pony i had had since i was a child she was 40 years old and i went to the barn and she was down on the barn floor ( she ran free and never left the yard had full run of yard and barn she was my barn goddess) i yelled for my husband to go get the phone and then i set down on the floor with her she looked up at me and nickered and then i wrapped my arms around her and held her head in my arms and she died right there before my husband could get out with phone i think she was waiting on me we were inseperable i use to ride her to town when i was a kid and share ice cream cones with her and cokes she loved pop and could turn a bottle of pop upside down and drink it anyway enough about that i just wanted you to know that i know your heartache and fill for you now they are all running in that big pasture in the sky i know God has a special place for them thanks for your sight

I am paying close attention to your advice on goats,as i am in the process of getting into dairy goats.
On another path you would be the one to ask about
a digital camera?I am asuming me being an unprofessional I would be better off staying under 10 mp.
How low can i go (mp)and still be satisfied with picture and color quality, and still be relativly easy to understand and operate?
I have considered the following; a cannon ps a480,
epson 3000z,nikon coolpix 990.
Am i in the ballpark on these? If not please make a
suggestion(s) thx
I have your website saved in my favorites

Thank you for the info, Elaine! I had pretty much decided to try it any way, but appreciate your comments. I feel foolish for not realizing they weren't Nubian. I've seen pictures of Boers and they look just like that. I would enjoy seeing pics of your "mini teddies".

As a whole... meat type breeds are bred for meat. but they also have to produce enough milk to keep growing kids healthy and well fed. I have pygmys, angora, cashmere and feinting goats. All these breeds are for other purposes than specifically milk. But some of all these breeds produce way more than enough milk for a kid. I had a pygmy that had so much milk that she dragged her nipples on the ground, and others that did not have enough milk for a single kid. I have had angoras that had so much milk it squirted when they trotted and others that never got any milk even on the second kid a year later. So even within breeds that are bred for meat or fiber, there will be some that produce enough milk for milking. So, since you are attached to these girls, you may want to see what they can do for you before investing in additional goats. Also, you may want to get a second opinion on the breed. Some mix breeds are harder to identify, and will have characteristics of both parents. As in - look like a boer father with lots of good muscle tone and produce milk like a nubian mother. Mixed breeds are usually larger and hardier than purebreeds. So if there is some boer blood in the mix - it could make them look stockier than their purebreed nubian mother. Even a little pygmy breeding can add a lot of muscle to a nubian frame. I have a cashmere buck that looks just like a boer except he has a horn spread of 3 feet wide and is so soft you just want to curl up with him for a nap. I am working on my own little breeding experiment. I have pygmy/casmere/feinting goats. They all look like mini teddy bears in winter.

Hi. I am fairly new to having goats. I bought 3 beautiful
Nubian girls last year. I had intended to breed them this fall and then milk them; staggering the breeding so that 2 were milking and one had the year off. I have been very excited and impatiently waiting for the season. One of the girls is sick, so I had a vet come out to check on her. Dr. Adams said they were quite lovely Boers. I said What? I did some research and, yes, it seems I have Boers, who are primarily used for meat. My question is: has anyone ever attempted to milk a Boer? And if so, is it worth while or should I continue my search for Nubians? Not that I would give up "my girls" or anything, but I was sooo looking forward to rich goat's milk. Thank you for your time and any advice you can give me!!

Hi, Molly, I appreciate your web site. I can see you have done alot of work to make it terrific! I have a question. Why do you not vaccinate for CD&T? I didn't vaccinate for a couple of years because I'm new to goats, and I didn't know about the vaccine, then last year I lost a beautiful baby doe to enterotoxemia. I was just heart-sick, and now I vaccinate. Just curious about your thoughts which led to your no-vaccine stance. Thanks! Laurie

Molly, I see that the comments are all three years old. So, maybe this is no longer an active page. We got a MINI a few months ago and made a reservation for MOTD. Then the rockslide :^( Now I don't even know how I am going to get from Michigan to the hotel in Robbinsville.

I have just finished reading your website. It is a wealth of information, I really love it. I am a petsitter. One of my clients has a small herd of Nubian does. I am on maternity watch now as 7 does are expecting within the next two weeks. I am going to pass on your spreadsheet and hopefully next year we will be able to zero in on the dates. I taught a new Mom how to nurse her twins last year. We have three new moms coming this year, hopefully with your advice things will go well. I am trying out the information today about the ligaments and being able to put your fingers close together at the tailbone.
Thank you for this website and your wonderful stories. I felt like I knew Goldie too. I had a whether for 14 years that was a close companion and know how it feels to lose them. I will be checking in frequently for help. Thank you again!

I'm still drying the tears off my cheeks. I am a newbie to the goat world and your story made me recognize how dear these unique creatures can be. All 7 of my "children" are less than a year old and I so look forward to having the same experiences you shared with Goldie. They will be forever and eternal, the memories we hopefully will take with us when it is our time.

Pretty talented to run the camera and deliver at the same time! Molly, I have a question for you... My Tinka is due to kid in @10-15 days, her first kidding. She, as far as I know, hasn't been tested for CAE or anythingelse.. so having said that, I'm planning to bottle feed the kids and not let Tinka clean them. What is your experience/advice on the matter?

My husband and I recently purchased a home with acreage...researching dairy goats and found your site. Loved the story...birth on March 31, 2007...OUR ANNIVERSARY. Many special articles and info have lead me to believe that raising dairy goats, beginning with 2 may be in our future. Thanks for your knowlege and helping others like me. I am a Pre-K teacher and reading about goats already reminds me of children.
