Usable Rear Seat Tie-Downs

I have been experimenting with making films of different roads I enjoy driving on, and had set up a webcam and laptop in the front seat of my car.

But, I decided to set my laptop up in my rear seat after finding out it was actually illegal to have a “television” viewable to a driver while driving (which does make sense).

The MINI has places in the rear seats to attach child seats. These seemed like a great way to bungee cord my laptop in place, but I found that no matter how hard I tried, I could not get my bungee cords to fit in the plastic opening so they could hook around the sturdy metal rods that would hold the child seat in place.

I had removed the plastic covers for the child seats when I had to remove my back seat to install my 4-point harness, so I knew they just pulled out and off (though you have to pull really hard). Once I removed the plastic, I could hook the bungee around the rod, but to be honest, it didn’t look so neat, and I am a neat freak. The simple solution to the problem was to get out my trusty Dremmel. I quickly made the necessary modifications and the project was a success. It’s taken me twice as long to write up this project than it took me to actually do it.

This modification in no way effects the effectiveness of the child seat hook-ups and now my rear seat tie-downs are so much more functional and useful.

The hook on the bungee will not fit in the hole. How frustrating.

The plastic cover is easily removed by pulling really hard. Now you can access the metal tie down rod.

You can hook the bungee around the rod now, but it dosen’t look so nice.

Time to get out the Dremmel…

Cut most of the bottom part of the plastic sleeve away.

Now the hole is bigger and you have easier access to the metal rod.

Yay, the bungee hook fits now. Now the rear tie downs are so much more useful.
